West Brom tightened their hold on the Championship play-off spot after extending their lead to seven points with a 2-1 win over Coventry City at home on Friday.
Following the recent completion of the club’s acquisition by Florida businessman Shilen Patel, West Brom secured the win with first-half goals from Mikey Johnston and Grady Diangana at The Hawthorns.
This victory solidified their position in fifth place, seven points ahead of seventh-placed Norwich, while Coventry stayed in ninth, trailing the play-off positions by four points.
In the Championship, only the top two teams are directly promoted to the Premier League at the end of the season. The third promotion spot is determined through play-off matches among the teams finishing third to sixth.
West Brom wasted little time against Coventry, with Johnston, on loan from Celtic, breaking through to score a superb goal six minutes in. Later, Diangana increased the lead with a goal assisted by Tom Fellows.
However, Coventry did manage to reduce the deficit in the 73rd minute with a penalty scored by Wright after Cedric Kipre fouled Kasey Palmer.
At the top of the Championship, Leicester City is leading by six points, while Leeds United is in second place, tied for points with Ipswich Town in third.
